The Ambient Picnic premiered on Millmead Island, Guildford in July 1997.

Not just a music event, The Ambient Picnic was created as a not for profit showcase for contemporary arts and activities within the local region. Power to run the music stages is provided by a number of innovative alternative generators using solar, wind, and alternative brown fuels. The event is a "Not for Profit" affordable family day out.

The format of the event ensures that we do not just attract people interested in green issues. The event aims to target families and young adults interested in a low cost day of entertainment, quality food and drink with friends. Our aim is to educate through enjoyment and interactivity. We show how everyone can have a great day without damaging our environment and feel good about it. Workshops encourage hands on activities aimed at young people and families. The Picnic has worked within LA21 (Local Agenda 21) since its conception in 1997. This year all contributors to the event must complete a basic environmental audit.

Attractions and activities include:

Live music stage – featuring national & regional acts. Signed & un-signed acts
Dance music stage – The best regional DJ’s + Live Break dance competitions
